Learning for Life Programme: Character, Citizenship and Leadership Development through Water Sports

Leveraging on the school’s proximity to Bedok Reservoir, Damai’s Learning for Life Programme (LLP) was designed to develop our students’ interests and skills in the area of water sports and also to hone their social and emotional competencies based on the school’s vision, mission and values and MOE’s framework on the 21st Century Competencies.

The LLP is aligned to the school’s vision, mission and values towards guiding our students to lead a purposeful and meaningful life. By integrating the approaches in CCE, leadership development and water sports, students will learn and develop through connecting their water sports experiences with the implicit and explicit values learnt in the CCE and leadership programmes. These values will also be reinforced through the PE programme and Inter-Class sports activities.

Character and Leadership Development
The LLP develops the character and leadership competencies at each level with age-appropriate activities.

In the water sports segment, students are equipped with swimming skills to boost their water confidence in Secondary One. After which, they continue to develop their water sports skills during their Kayak 1-Star Award course in Secondary Two. In Secondary Three, they learn to work with one another during the Dragon Boat Orientation Programme. These three water sports are offered as level-wide programmes to ensure that the students are equipped with the basic skills of managing a craft and water safety knowledge. The LLP then allows the students to further explore their interests in Secondary Four when they choose to pick up water sports skills from a series of water sports such as Flippa ball, sailing, wind surfing, flow riding, stand-up paddling, scuba diving or Kayak 2-Star award.

Character and leadership development starts in Secondary One when they participate in the Secondary One Orientation Camp. Apart from helping the Secondary One students ease through the transition, the camp is where they forge new friendships and bonds with their peers and camp leaders and develop resilience through meaningful and engaging activities developed by our very own Damai camp leaders. When the students progress to Secondary Two, they embark on their Secondary Two Adventure Camp where they will explore and understand their personal strengths better through the various challenging activities. The focus is to develop fundamental leadership skills of effective communication and managing relationships and conflicts in a small group setting. In Secondary Three, the students embark on their OBS journey where they develop resilience, respect, empathy and compassion through outdoor adventure learning.

Citizenship Education
In Secondary Three, our students will partake in the clean-up of the waterways along the Kallang River (currently known as Marina Reservoir) as their Values-in-Action programme. This activity is extremely meaningful as our students apply the skills they learnt from their Kayak 1-Star Award to contribute to the environment. Through this activity, students better understand how litter that flows into our waterways through the drainage system affects the ecosystem in our water bodies.  This knowledge and experience will help to imbue in them a strong sense of responsibility and service to keep Singapore’s water resource clean.

Water Sports CCAs
The highlights of Damai’s water sports activities and LLP learning are our Canoeing and Dragon Boat CCAs. These two CCAs train in Bedok Reservoir and the CCA members truly enjoy our water bodies which are made available for recreational sporting activities.
Canoeing and Dragon Boat CCA members display high level of resilience with their intensive training schedules and activities. Students learn to stretch their personal limits and take ownership of their training and eventually, performance.
With the funds provided from the LLP, these students are able to receive high quality coaching.

Other Platforms for Water Sports
The school organises annual inter-class kayak and dragon boat races and biennial water sports carnival to provide platforms for our students to put their skills they have learnt from the LLP into use. Leverage on the inter-class platforms, students pit their skills in various friendly competitions to practice the water sports skills they have learnt and work together as a class, leading to stronger class bonds.

LLP Alignment with School Vision, Mission & Values

Thus, through active participation in the school’s LLP, students who complete their journey with Damai Secondary School will be equipped with values, attitude, knowledge and skills to learn a purposeful and meaningful life.
