Additional Demerit Points to be awarded against Errant Drivers in School Zones

In March 2013, Second Minister for Home Affairs, S Iswaran, announced in Parliament that there will be additional measures undertaken to enhance road safety for children. Motorists who commit traffic offences within School Zones will be subjected to a harsher penalty. 

From 1 January 2014, motorists will receive an additional demerit point if they commit speeding, red-light, careless driving or inconsiderate driving offences within school zones. The intent of this change is to prompt drivers to exercise greater care and deter drivers from committing traffic offences within School Zones so as to protect the students who frequently use these roads. 

Demerit points for Traffic Offenders

School Zones are demarcated by the signs as shown below:
